The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, investigated illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Newport, and Salmonella Richmond infections linked to recalled dietary supplements containing moringa leaf powder imported from India. Based on additional epidemiologic and genetic information, CDC included additional illnesses of Salmonella Richmond in this outbreak. As of July 22, 2026, a total of 131 people infected with one of the outbreak strains of Salmonella have been reported from 38 states (AK, AL, AR, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, KY, MA, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NE, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI). Illnesses started on dates ranging from August 22, 2025, to June 14, 2026. Of 121 people with information available, 36 were hospitalized, and no deaths were reported. CDC has declared the outbreak over. Of the 84 ill people interviewed during the entire outbreak, 74 (88%) reported eating a product containing moringa leaf powder, including 63 who reported Live it Up Super Greens supplement powders only, 5 who reported Why Not Natural moringa powder capsules only, 1 person who reported consuming both Live it Up Super Greens supplement powder and Why Not Natural moringa powder capsules products, and 5 who reported TNVitamins moringa powder capsules only. The products linked to illnesses in this outbreak have a long shelf life. FDA is reminding consumers and retailers not to eat, sell, or serve recalled products containing moringa leaf powder. As part of the investigation, FDA and state partners from Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin collected finished product and ingredient samples from sick people’s homes and firms in the supply chain. A total of 12 samples tested positive for Salmonella, and 11 samples detected at least one of the outbreak strains of Salmonella during WGS analysis. To protect public health, FDA has increased screening of imported moringa powder from India for Salmonella. FDA continues to work with industry and federal partners to safeguard dietary supplements containing moringa leaf powder in the United States. The FDA’s outbreak investigation is complete.
