The FDA’s Foods Program achievements in 2022 to protect consumers and the food supply

The FDA details its achievements for 2022. One of the toughest challenges the FDA has faced since the passage of FSMA was the infant formula contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii.FDA worked to minimize the shortage of infant formula that resulted. The FDA has expanded access to infant formula by exercising enforcement discretion for 12 firms to temporarily import their foreign-produced infant formula products into the U.S. market. They also worked to increase capacity by exercising flexibility on ingredient and packaging supply chain issues. FDA outlined a prevention strategy for Cronobacter sakazakii to reduce illnesses. In 2022 the FDA introduced the New Era of Smarter Food Safety. In November, the FDA issued the final rule of Food Traceability. Other achievements include work on the finalization of Agriculture water, the creation Agriculture water assessment builder; the release of prevention strategies for specific commodity-hazard pairings; entering into an agreement with CDC to strengthen food safety in retail and foodservice establishments; the release of document on Activities for the safety of imported produce; enhanced oversight of imported shrimp from the three largest exporting countries; Leveraged FSVP to ensure compliance with GMP.
