Total Products Distributors of Brooklyn, NY, recalled its Sea Star Smoked Herring because the fish was found to be uneviscerated, posing a risk of Clostridium botulinum contamination. The Sea Star Smoked Herring was manufactured in Canada by Sea Star Seafood Ltd. and was subsequently recalled in the US by distributors in New York due to the risk of Clostridium botulinum contamination. The recalled product was distributed to retail stores in New York, New Jersey, and Maryland. No illnesses have been reported. The product is packaged in 18 lb (8.165 kg) wooden cases. The recall was initiated after routine inspections by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets found the product to be uneviscerated, which is prohibited in New York due to health concerns.
