The Public Health Authority of Sweden reported an increase in Salmonella typhimurium sequence type 36 cases. Alfalfa sprouts may be a common source of infection. From August onwards, 92 cases from 18 regions have contracted one of 12 genetically closely related variants of Salmonella typhimurium of sequence type 36 (ST 36. The Public Health Authority, in collaboration with the country's regional infection control units, has carried out a case-control study. The results of a questionnaire show that the disease cases have more often eaten alfalfa sprouts than the healthy control subjects. The alfalfa sprouts eaten by the victims have been purchased in different stores or served in different restaurants or canteens. Continued investigative work occurs in collaboration with the Public Health Agency, the Swedish Food Agency, the relevant infection control agencies, municipalities, and the County Administrative Board. Collaboration also occurs internationally to detect the possible spread of Salmonella typhimurium ST 36 in other European countries. @ https://www.folkhalsomyndigheten.se/smittskydd-beredskap/utbrott/aktuella-utbrott/salmonella-typhimurium-st-36-sverige-augusti-2024/
