The CDC had issued its final report on cyclosporiasis illness in the US. As of October 24, 2023, 41 jurisdictions, including 40 states and New York City, have reported 2,272 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis. These individuals had not traveled outside of the United States during the 14 days before they got sick. The number of cases is an increase of 315 cases since the last update on August 31, 2023. One hundred eighty-six have been hospitalized. Zero deaths have been reported. According to the CFIA, Maple Leaf Foods (Toronto, Ontario) has recalled Maple Leaf branded Vienna Sausage products from the Canadian marketplace due to bulging cans posing possible spoilage. The Vienna sausages were sold in 113 gram cans, with all best-before date codes up to and including 2025 AU 24 (i.e., August 24, 2025) with a partial UPC of 0 636191 8. According to the CFIA, Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC, doing business as Fanny Bay Oysters (British Columbia) recalled Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC / Fanny Bay Oysters Cloudy Bay Oysters and Sunseeker Oysters from the Canadian marketplace due to suspected Vibrio parahaemolyticus contamination. The CFIA reports that the following Seafood products are subject to this recall (i) Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC / Fanny Bay Oysters Cloudy Bay Oysters Petite, sold in XSmall, Small, Medium sizes and (ii) Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC / Fanny Bay Oysters Sunseeker Oysters Petite, XSmall, Small, Medium, sold in XSmall, Small, Medium sizes. The FDA, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services (NCDA&CS) investigate reports of four children with elevated blood lead levels, indicating potential acute lead toxicity. The NCDHHS investigation identified WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree pouches as a potential shared source of exposure. As part of their investigation, NCDHHS analyzed multiple lots of WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree, detecting extremely high lead concentrations. On October 31, 2023, Wanabana LLC initiated a recall of all WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree Pouches. Two additional brands of products are also subject to recall: Schnucks cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches and variety pack and certain Weis cinnamon applesauce pouches. FDA has received additional reports of illnesses and is working to evaluate those complaints. WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches are sold nationally and are available through multiple retailers, including Sam’s Club, Amazon, Dollar Tree, and other online outlets. Schnucks brand cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches and variety packs are sold at Schnucks and Eatwell Markets grocery stores.
