EFSA conducts the survey every three years. This year, it includes the 27 EU member states and seven EU candidate countries. The Eurobarometer fieldwork was conducted in March and April of 2025, involving more than 26,300 interviews in EU countries and 5,600 interviews in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Turkey between March and May. The majority of EU citizens are interested in food safety, and it is among the most important factors affecting food-purchasing decisions 72% are ‘personally interested’ in the topic of food safety. Interest is especially high in Greece (98%), Cyprus (95%), and Finland (88%). Cost (60%) is the most frequently selected factor by EU citizens as the most important when buying food. Taste (51%) comes second, followed by food safety (46%). The proportion of individuals mentioning cost as one of the main factors when buying food has increased by 6% since 2022. Awareness of food safety topics remains high among EU citizens. 28% have a very high level of awareness of food safety (+ 7% from 202). 78% of EU citizens indicate they are likely to change their food preparation or consumption behavior if a food poisoning incident is reported and authorities advise taking precautionary measures. The results of the Eurobarometer survey on ‘Food safety in the EU’ clearly show that EU citizens are interested in food safety, that they are generally aware of food safety topics, and that they take into account food safety concerns in their behavior as consumers.@ https://www.efsa.europa.eu/sites/default/files/2025-09/2025%20EB%20103.3%20EFSA%20Report_vfinal.pdf
