Widespread salmonella outbreak in the European Union/European Economic Area linked to sprouted seeds

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control published a report that Public health and food safety authorities across Europe are investigating prolonged and widespread outbreaks of Salmonella infection linked to the consumption of sprouted alfalfa seeds. Between January 2023 and January 2025, 509 people were reported with salmonellosis in nine EU/EEA countries. The most affected country was Norway, with 257 cases, followed by Sweden, Finland, and Germany. The outbreak is ongoing, and cases of salmonellosis may continue to be found until the point(s) where the seeds were contaminated is identified and properly controlled. Investigations have confirmed that sprouted seeds are the cause of these infections. As a result of epidemiological investigations, including WGS analysis and food tracing, seeds were linked to a single supplier in Italy, which sourced its seeds from three growers in the same region. However, further investigation is needed to determine how the seeds became contaminated and whether there was any cross-contamination along the supply chain. This outbreak has included multiple Salmonella strains, some of which are rarely seen in Europe. By sharing information from national outbreak investigations at EU level, specifically WGS data, it was possible to link the investigations to a single source. @ https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/publications-data/rapid-outbreak-assessment-prolonged-cross-border-multi-serovar-salmonella

A cross-border multi-serovar Salmonella enterica outbreak linked to the consumption of sprouted seeds has been ongoing in Europe since 2023.

Listeria found in raw milk at Ballston Town of New York State

New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets reported that raw milk from Willow March farm in Ballston Spa tested positive for Listeria for the second time this year. Willow-Marsh Farm was recovering from its first Listeria contamination in January. It forced the farm to dump hundreds of gallons of raw milk. They were just approved to sell again in mid-February. New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Richard A. Ball today warned consumers not to consume unpasteurized raw milk from Willow Marsh Farm due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. A sample of the milk collected by an inspector from the Department was discovered to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. On February 27, 2025, the producer was notified of a preliminary positive test result. Further laboratory testing, completed on March 4, 2025, confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the raw milk sample. The producer is now prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent sampling indicates that the product is free of harmful bacteria. @ https://agriculture.ny.gov/news/consumer-alert-listeria-monocytogenes-contamination-raw-milk-saratoga-county-0
