CORE update as of August 16, 2023

CORE update as of August 16, 2023, the CORE list of outbreaks and adverse events includes five active cases. There were no new cases this week. For the outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes (ref #1172) potentially linked to ice cream, a recall was issued on 8/10/2023, and sample collection and analysis have been initiated. For the outbreak of Cyclospora cayetanensis (ref #1171), the case count has increased from 55 to 59 cases. The outbreak has ended, and FDA’s investigation has closed. In the UK Iceland Foods recalls Cathedral City Cheese & Ham Gratin due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes

The FSA reported that Iceland recalled Cathedral City Cheese & Ham Gratin because Listeria monocytogenes have been found in the product. Cathedral City Cheese & Ham Gratin is sold in  400g packages. The FSA said the affected products have a best before date of May 2, 2024, and should not be eaten. @ https://www.food.gov.uk/news-alerts/alert/fsa-prin-27-2023

Monster brand caffeinated energy drinks recalled due to caffeine content and labeling

According to the CFIA, 5002589 Ontario Inc. has recalled Monster Caffeinated Energy Drinks from the Canadian marketplace due to reported failure to comply with Canada’s Caffeine content and labeling requirements properly. Monster branded Caffeinated Energy Drinks are sold in 16-fluid ounce (~473 ml) cans. All flavors that contain Caffeine and do not have bilingual (English and French) labeling are affected. This is another recall by the CFIA related to caffeinated drinks. Mateína Yerba Mate Sparkling Energy Infusions were recalled due to caffeine labeling requirements

The CFIA reported the recall of Mateina Organic Raspberry Yuzu Yerba Mate Sparkling Energy Infusion and Organic Mango Key Lime Yerba Mate Sparkling Energy Infusion. The products are being recalled from the marketplace due to non-compliance regarding supplemented food cautionary labeling requirements to avoid excessive caffeine consumption. There have been no reported reactions associated with the consumption of these products. The products were distributed in Quebec.
