Europe rejects US chickens that are washed with chlorinated water due to food safety concerns

President Trump is pushing for more countries to import meat and poultry from the US. Still, Europeans have reported concern over purchasing chicken from the US because they might be washed in chlorine. Yahoo News reported that the move comes after the EU and the UK failed to avoid Trump’s tariffs, in which the US imposed a 20% tax on EU imports and a 10% tax on all UK imports. “The UK maintains non-science-based standards that severely restrict US exports of safe, high-quality beef and poultry products,” the White House said. The US does not require processors to disclose whether their chicken has been chemically washed, creating an apparent transparency gap between American and European food standards. The EU first banned chlorine-washed chicken in 1997. In the US, agencies consider chlorinated chicken safe. The EU Commission believes that consuming large amounts, equal to 5% of your body weight, could expose consumers to unsafe levels of chlorate. Consumer Reports found that 97% of 300 US chicken breasts contained pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Campylobacter and that nearly half contained antibiotic-resistant bacteria. @ https://www.yahoo.com/news/europe-rejects-us-chlorinated-chicken-124136228.html
