Corn Possibly Tainted with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes Causes Ripple Recalls of Various Salads

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced in five separate notices the recall of ready-to-eat salad products containing steak or chicken due to the corn present in the products that might be contaminated with both Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.

Mary’s Harvest Fresh Foods, Inc recalled ~ 916 pounds of ready-to-eat wrap and salad products  that contain a corn ingredient that may be contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. The ready-to-eat salad and wrap products were produced from Oct. 5 through Oct. 13, 2018. These items were shipped to retail locations in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. The problem was discovered on Oct. 15, 2018, when the company received notification that the corn used in the production of their ready-to-eat wrap and salad products was being recalled by their corn supplier due to Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella concerns.

GH Foods CA, LLC recalled ~940 pounds of ready-to-eat salad with chicken products that contain a corn ingredient that may be contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. These items were shipped to retail locations in California. The ready-to-eat salads with chicken were produced on various dates from Oct. 9, 2018, through Oct. 13, 2018. The problem was discovered on October 16, 2018, when GH Foods CA, LLC received notification that the corn used in the production of their ready-to-eat salads with chicken was being recalled by their corn supplier.

GHSE, LLC  recalled ~738 pounds of ready-to-eat salad with meat products that contain a corn ingredient that may be contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. These  items were shipped to retail locations in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. The problem was discovered on Oct. 15, 2018, when GHSE, LLC received notification that the corn used in the production of their ready-to-eat salad product was being recalled by their corn supplier.

Prime Deli Corporation recalled ~ 217 pounds of ready-to-eat salad with bacon products that contain a corn ingredient that may be contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. The ready-to-eat salads with bacon were produced on October 13. These items were shipped to retail locations in Texas.   The problem was discovered on October 14, 2018, when Prime Deli Corporation received notification that the corn used in the production of their Southwest Style Salad with Bacon was being recalled by their corn supplier.

Taylor Farms Northwest LLC recalled ~ 276 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) pork  carnitas bowl products that contain tomatillos that may be contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. These items were shipped to retail locations in Oregon and Washington. The problem was discovered on Oc tober 15, 2018, when Taylor Farms Northwest received notification that fire-roasted diced tomatillos used in the production of their pork carnitas bowls were being recalled by their tomatillos supplier due to Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella concerns.

Ripple Recalls

Additional recalls resulted in from the potentially contaminated corn:

7-Eleven recalled two types of salads sold in its stores in Texas due to the Prime Deli recall of its salads containing the contaminated corn. The GH Foods ready to eat salads were sold under the Whole Food brand in California. On its website Trader Joe’s have posted the recalled salads that resulted in from Mary’s Harvest Fresh Foods, Inc.

The supplier of the corn remains unnamed currently. It is expected that more recalls will come in the next few days.  Currently, there are no confirmations of any illnesses as a result of all these recalls.
