The FDA reported that Built Brands, LLC. (American Fork, UT), recalled 4,196 individual bars of its “Banana Cream Pie Puffs” protein bar because they could potentially be contaminated with pathogenic Escherichia coli. The recalled product was distributed nationwide to 1,049 potential customers through mail orders and would have been received by customers after June 6, 2022. The product comes in a 40 gram package marked with lot # D22151011. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall. The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing conducted by an accredited third-party laboratory at the request of Built Brands detected the presence of Escherichia coli. The FSA with Food Standards Scotland (FSS) investigated a recall by Waitrose 2 British Hot Smoked Rainbow Trout Fillets because Listeria monocytogenes had been found in the product. The investigation started in April 2022. The CDC reported that by June 11, 2022, 219 illnesses had been reported from 38 states, and 27 people had been hospitalized. One in four sick people is children younger than 5 years. One death has been reported from Tennessee. The actual number of sick people is likely much higher than the reported number, as many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella. These outbreaks occur annually and coincide with the increase in baby poultry purchases, beginning in the spring. Last year in 2021, a total of 1,135 people got sick from contact with backyard poultry. Last year by May 2021, 163 people were infected with one of the outbreak strains reported from 43 states. 34 people were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. As of June 23, 2020, 465 people infected with Salmonella have been reported from 42 states. One death in Oklahoma has been reported. They were purchased between March 5, 2022, and April 15, 2022, and are all past their expiry. As of June 7, 2022, the CDC reported one additional case related to the outbreak. This outbreak includes a total of 18 illnesses and 13 hospitalizations.
