The Washington Post reported that Mexico’s health minister, David Kershenobich, said no evidence has yet indicated that a lettuce farm in Guanajuato, Mexico, is the source of the cyclosporiasis outbreak in the US, despite an FDA conclusion linking the farm to the investigation. Mr. Kershenobich pointed to an FDA finding on Monday that Cyclospora contamination in a sample of shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico was a false positive. He said “no evidence has been found to indicate that the source is there. “However, we are taking all precautions in case that is the case.” His remarks contradict an assertion from the FDA that there was “overwhelming epidemiological data” to support the voluntary recall by Taylor Farms of iceberg lettuce from central Mexico. FDA’s outbreak notice still warns consumers not to eat recalled iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico, because the evidence linking Taylor Farms de Mexico comes from a separate batch of food that led the company to initiate a recall.
