In Europe, Nestlé recalled several SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula due to the presence of cereulide (toxin)

Nestlé has taken the precautionary step of recalling several SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula because they may contain cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin from Bacillus cereus that causes food poisoning. Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus. It is highly heat-stable, meaning it is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by cooking, boiling water, or when making infant milk. The alert was issued on Monday, 5 January 2026, and updated on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, to improve the formatting. No new batches have been added. The possible presence of cereulide (toxin) makes these products unsafe to consume. If cereulide is consumed, it can lead to a rapid onset of symptoms. Symptoms caused by this toxin include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.

Nestlé is recalling the above products. Point-of-sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores selling these products. Nestlé has issued a global recall of some baby formula products over concerns that they may contain a toxin that can cause food poisoning. Nestlé said that specific batches of its SMA infant and follow-on formulas were not safe to feed to babies. There had been no confirmed reports of illness associated with the products, but they were recalling them "out of an abundance of caution. Affected products were sold in several European countries, including France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Italy, and Sweden. @ https://www.food.gov.uk/news-alerts/alert/fsa-prin-02-2026
