The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is alerting Coloradans to a significant increase in Salmonella cases and asking people to be aware of the symptoms. As of July 28, more than 250 Salmonella cases have been reported in Colorado since July 1. Over the past five years, Colorado has averaged 125 cases in July. The Colorado Public Health Laboratory uses WGS to compare the genetic fingerprints of Salmonella from people who test positive. This testing helps public health officials identify potentially connected cases and detect early increases in illness. CDPHE is coordinating with local public health agencies, the CDC, the FDA, and public health partners in other states to identify potential connections among cases and potential food sources linked to the uptick. Federal investigators have not confirmed a specific food, restaurant, supplier, or other source.
